Review

Symphony, El Paso Brass pay tribute to the Holidays.

The spirit of the season is off to an exciting start with the first of two holiday concerts by the El Paso Symphony Orchestra. ...The orchestra's featured guest artists, the El Paso Brass, punctuated the familiar and not-so-familiar tunes and added a distinct touch of class with their brass. ...The quintet consists of trunpeters Sam Trimble and Kenneth Capshaw, hornist Richard Lambrecht, tall trombonist Jan Zubek and tuba artist James Shearer. One of the most pleasant surprises of the night was a Bob Lethermon arrangement of "A Spanish Carol." The blend of Trimble and Capshaw was almost too smooth to be true as their searing tones cut through the theater's air in perfect mariachi-like harmony. The selection of short pieces continued with Bach's "My Spirit Be Joyful" and Wilke-Lethermon's "Dance," but the real jewels of the night were Grainger's "Sussex Mummers Carol" and selections from Tchaikovsky's beloved "Nutcracker Suite." -- El Paso Times
